Perché fuggi tra salci,
ritrosetta ma bella,
o cruda tra le crude pastorella?
Perché un bacio ti tolsi?
Miser più che felice,
corsi per sugger vita, e mor te colsi.
Quel bacio che m’ha morto,
tra le rose d’amor pungente spina,
fu più vendetta tua che mia rapina.

English translation

Why do you flee amongst the willows,
reluctant but beautiful,
oh cruel, oh cruellest shepherdess?
Because I stole a kiss?
More wretched than happy
I pursued you to taste life and found death instead.
That kiss killed me,
amongst the prickly thorns of Love’s roses,
was more your vengeance than my plunder.
