Rosmarin, Op. 62, No. 1 (Johannes Brahms)

1. Es wollt’ die Jungfrau früh aufstehn,
wollt’ in des Vaters Garten gehn.
Rot’ Röslein wollt’ sie brechen ab,
davon wollt’ sie sich machen
ein Kränzelein wohl schön.

2. Es sollt’ ihr Hochzeitskränzlein sein:
„Dem feinen Knab’, dem Knaben mein.
Ihr Röslein rot, ich brech’ euch ab,
davon will ich mir winden,
ein Kränzelein so schön.“

3. Sie ging im Grünen her und hin,
statt Röslein fand sie Romarin:
„So bist du, mein Getreuer, hin!
Kein Röslein ist zu finden,
kein Kränzelein so schön.“

4. Sie ging im Garten her und hin,
statt Röslein brach sie Rosmarin:
„Das nimm du, mein Getreuer, hin!
Lieg’ bei dir unter Linden,
mein Totenkränzlein schön.“

1. At morning’s prime went forth a maid,
and in her father’s garden stray’d.
She sought for roses white and red,
and meant of them to gather
a garland fair to view.

2. It was to be her bridal day:
‘Oh love, I’ll hold thee dear alway.
I’ll pluck ye roses, white and red,
that with ye I may bind me
a garland fair to view.’

3. But stead of roses she could see
no flow’r that bloom’d but Rosemary:
‘And art thou gone, my only love!
No roses more I’ll gather,
no garland fair to view.’

4. The maiden sought till close of day,
and made her wreath of Rosemary:
‘If thou art dead, my only love!
I’ll sleep beneath the linden,
now life and love adieu.’
